Bonus: Extreme Couponing Tips from Me & Mrs. Goblin
#1: Bring the kids
In episode 5, a late sitter means Stephanie has to bring her son couponing with her. We say skip the sitter! Mrs. Goblin and I love taking Gabby and Garth on our couponing adventures. It’s a great way to teach kids the value of money while spending some time together out and about. The only hard part is trying to make sure Garth doesn’t try to sneak some extra beef jerky into the shopping cart!
#2: Ask a friend for help
Episode 10, when Kelly teaches her friend how to coupon, reminded me to thank my buddy Gary Goblin and his wife Gertie who taught Mrs. Goblin and me how to coupon with the best of ’em. Do you have a friend who’s into couponing? Ask them to show you the ropes and you’ll be on your way in no time.
#3: Don’t do crack
Also in episode 10 you met Amanda, who says she “feels like she’s on crack” when she’s couponing. Though we are green, Mrs. Goblin and I feel compelled to suggest that you don’t do drugs while you’re couponing. It’s not really healthy, and in your altered state you could easily miss a few good deals. I tried to teach my old fraternity brother Kevin to coupon (shoutout to ΓΒΛ) and he was so blitzed he bought $20 worth of circus peanuts with no coupons at all.
#4: Keep it out of the bedroom
While we love couponing as a couple, Mrs. Goblin and I don’t recommend you keep your stockpile in the bedroom like Tiffany from episode 1. There’s a time, and a place for everything, and no matter how delicious it is, the bedroom is no place for a couple dozen boxes of mac ‘n cheese. Speaking of mac ‘n cheese, here’s an old Goblin family secret… throw some bacon bits in your mac ‘n cheese for a little extra awesome.
#5: Be sure to give back
At some point your stockpile may become so big you start thinking “what am I going to do with all this stuff?!?!?!” When this happens to you, remember Nathan (ep. 3) and Antoinette (ep. 6) who both use their couponing skills to help others. In fact, the Mrs. and I are so into helping others we’ve recently started our own charity, “The Goblin Fund.”
